The Bates Family

Annual Lake Adventure

by Kelly on October 10, 2013

At the close of every summer, boys and their Dads gather at Mr. and Mrs. Hank Brink’s  lake property in Loudon, TN. The event began as Nathan’s birthday party and grew into a time of fun, Bible study, and fellowship for the guys. It’s always encouraging to hear about the adventures enjoyed and the spiritual commitments made! We are grateful to all the participants and are especially grateful to the Brinks!!

That is truly one amazing property! How big is the property and the lake?

Hi Kelly,
I love watching the updates of the fun things you all do. I am excited to see wedding pictures over the next few months. I was wondering if you would share about your menu, likes and how you make it work with a large family. I have a small family of 5 children and am praying that God blesses us with many more, but we already have a food challenge and love ideas.

Dear Melinda,
Breakfast is simple do it yourself menus like cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, fruit, cheese toast, or quick scrambled eggs. Lunch is quick and simple too, like: leftovers, soup, sandwiches, salads. Supper is our sit down meal with meat and veggies, but we have some quickies for that too. Make a list of all the meat/ main dishes you cook…then make a list of all veggies/ salads/ pastas, etc. that you fix. Then you’ll have a guide to refer to and to add to. Sample meat/ main dishes: chicken, casserole, dreamy chicken, lemon pepper chicken,bar-b-q chicken, sauteed chicken, fried chicken, chicken pot pie, chicken n dumplings, chicken quessadillas, chicken alfredo, meatloaf, chili, spaghetti, tacos, hamburgers, hamburger gravy over noodles, etc. Veggies/ pasta samples: salads, mac & cheese, green beans, broccoli, pintos, baked beans, limas, peas, baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, fried potatoes, corn, slaw, sweet potatoes, sauteed zucchini and onions, refried beans, rice, etc. Other sides: fruit, jello salads, boiled eggs, etc. Now, just combine items to make a menu. Experiment on which meals are quick for spur of the moment guests, etc. Which ones can be made out of canned food or pre cooked frozen beef or chicken to speed up preparation. Which ones stretch for large crowds, etc. Love, Kelly

Mrs. Bates, is this the same trip that’ll be featured on the Duggars’ show in a couple of weeks? I thought I would ask because I watched the preview and it showed you talking about a camping trip when they were at your house. How often do the Duggars visit you and your family?

Reply

Kelly October 13, 2013 at 3:33 am

Dear Kelly,
No, that is a girl’s camping trip… We get to see them some if they’re driving through and happen to surprise us with a stop over. Often they’re in a hurry, so we only get to meet at Chick-Fil-A or send them our love via phone as they pass through. Love, kelly

Reply

Alexandra October 15, 2013 at 10:46 pm

I’m curious about the girls trip – the clip I saw, the Duggar girls mentioned that they wear wholesome wear, which was shown on the clip, however most of the girls simply wore skirts. Do your girls wear wholesome wear as well?

Reply

Kelly October 18, 2013 at 1:47 am

Dear Alexandra,
We’ve never bought from that company, because they are pricey. Michael sewed swim dresses that were similar using their dress for ideas. Most of the older girls outgrew theirs, though, and just wore skirts. Love, Kelly

Mrs. Bates,
I have a quick request.. I know that you guys have a lot going on in your lives right now with 2 weddings, but I’m getting married in 6 days and I’m just wondering if you and your family will be pray warriors for me this week?? It’s really easy to say you’ll pray for someone and even easier to forget when your talking to God and I feel like your family really strives to follow through with the prayer requests you get from friends on here! So I’m asking if you’ll pray for two very specific things 1. Mental peace for me from worrying and 2. The weather! The wedding is outside so the weather is important. I’ve got my family, friends and preacher all backing us up in prayer and I was wondering if I could ask you to do the same this week?? I know your got so much on your plate and I hate to add more but prayer is so powerful that you can never have too much!!
Good luck to the happy couples as both wedding days approach!! They are on my prayer list!!
Love,
Michelle P.

So much fun!!!!! We go to lake during the spring/summer and we have all these same pictures :) Except its about 110 degrees or hotter & desert surroundings. Looking at your pictures, I’m thinking I’d much rather be on a river in Tennessee on our boat with those beautiful surroundings than melting in Havasu! LOL!!!!

Kelly,
Looks like a great time was had by all! I was wondering if you could share some mother advice? I’m a mom to 2 boys ages 4 and 2 1/2 as well as a daughter who is 5 months. My boys most days are like oil and water, arguing over almost everything. Any suggestions for me to help them get along and play nicer with each other? I know you are so busy but any help you can offer to me as a newer mom would be greatly appreciated!
All the best!

Reply

Kelly October 22, 2013 at 4:02 am

Dear Mel,
Remind them often to enjoy their friendship together. Play with them often and try to listen and observe…Are most of the arguments over selfishness? Jealousy? Personality differences? etc. If you can discern the nature of the cause, you’ll be more prepared to address that need in Bible study time. Emphasize the character quality that will most contribute to solving that particular problem. If the root cause seems to be selfishness, try to emphasize putting others first and sharing. Read some Christian books on birth order and try to understand some of the feelings and attitudes they might face as a result. Be sure to praise positive qualities and actions in both children. Love, Kelly

Thank you very much Kelly for the thoughtful reply. I will put your advice to work right away :) . Congratulations on all the exciting events happening in your family at this time and thank you for taking time away from all that excitement to encourage and guide a new (and sometimes exasperated!) mom.
Sincerely,
Mel

I’ve never commented before but I just want to let you know that I admire your families values tremendously. My family lives in Kingsport TN so it’s always so nice to see pictures of your family enjoying the same places that my family enjoys in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. I love keeping up with the happenings of your family especially the “love stories”. It was wonderful to see Erin’s engagement on the Duggars last night. Best wishes to you and your entire family in everything you do. May God richly bless you.

Hi Kelly! I just had a general question out of curiosity. What are the sleeping arrangements like in your house? (I believe I read that your house has five bedrooms.) Do you divide by age (ie. older girls’ room and little girls’ room), sleep habits, oldest with youngest, etc.? Have you ever had to adjust the sleeping arrangements? As I grew up with just one sister and never really had to share a room, I always find this interesting.

Reply

Kelly October 22, 2013 at 3:55 am

Dear Jean,
Counting the old, original portion of the house, we have seven bedrooms, and an eight room that can convert to a spare bedroom when needed. The boys are divided into 2 oversized rooms, with a single bed for each boy and a bathroom in each room. The girls are divided in three rooms, with three bathrooms. They also each have their own bed. There is an extra large guest room with six beds and two bathrooms, plus a spare room that can be converted to a bedroom when needed. The Duggars generosity to help enlarge the house has been a blessing that we have benefited from on a daily basis. We will always be grateful for their sacrifice of love. Love, Kelly

Dear Melinda,
I’m so sorry…I’ll have to try to find it, but some questions that require thought, or looking up resources, or that I really want to be able to answer without distraction get pushed aside until I can devote more time…then they sometimes get so far down in the comment list that its hard to make myself take the time needed to answer carefully and thoughtfully. This is an especially busy time, so some questions might be a little more delayed. Love, Kelly

I notice that Jim Bob is wearing shorts in one of the pictures. In one episode of 19 Kids it said the men and boys in the family don’t wear shorts. Have their standards of dress changed?

Reply

Kelly November 8, 2013 at 10:14 pm

Dear Wendy,
It’s not our place to write about some one else’s views…but I can speak for ourselves. For us, we are constantly changing and re-evaluating our opinions. Sometimes that means growing toward stronger convictions. Sometimes we might loosen up in our ideas of certain things, as we take a closer look. Sometimes we get too loose or too strict and re-evaluate again! Life is ever changing as we search to find balance. We are influenced by church, friends, the Bible, sermons, etc. The christian life is a life of growing…and that means change. Sometimes we might move in the wrong direction, and have to do a u-turn, but we’re ever trying to evaluate and discern what’s best for our family. Maybe that accounts for some of the changes you see in our family or in others. Love, Kelly
