Goodbye to Courtship

by Kelly on August 10, 2013

Goodbye to Courtship and Hello to Engagement for Chad and Erin! This past Monday, August 5, Chad proposed to Erin…(She said yes, of course!) I don’t have the photos back yet, so I’ll save the details for the next post…

In the meantime, I’ll share some of the special memori10680405es they’ve shared over the past 8 months of courtship, through countless trips back and forth from Oklahoma and Tennessee!

One outing was to one of our favorite restaurants at McCloud Mountain (http://www.mtcloud.com/)

Sooooo delighted and Gods blessing on you both when’s the wedding and where are they going to live?

Kelly August 12, 2013 at 4:21 am

Dear Ria,
They want to get married this fall. Erin has one semester left to graduate. She decided that it’d be a drastic change to go from a large family to an empty house, so to make the change easier, she wants to only take 2 on-line classes this fall, and finish the rest at Crown in January. She would have classes to go to during the days, along with lessons to teach…and siblings could visit while Chad’s at work. Love, Kelly

How wonderful for them both:) We were blessed to be married in April of 1998 and have been blessed with 4 wonderful children and are expecting a fifth baby in January. We are leaving the size of our family up to God as well and wish we had realized it sooner. We have been married for 15 years. We had our first child in 2006

Hi Kelly

A big, BIG congratulations to Erin and Chad. Please don’t leave it too long before posting photographs. I was wondering whether the engagement is likely to be long or short. Is there a preference either way or will it just depend on the individual couple.

Best wishes,
Tracy from England

They were hoping for October 26th, but Chad’s pick for best man was already committed to be in another wedding…so they’re hoping for an alternate date in November. Love, Kelly

Dear Debbie,
Our old producer actually asked if he could film it…He asked one of the camera men and sound man to come. They all came at their own expense! We had all missed each other and have been ever so grateful for getting to know each other and working together. I’m not sure where or how Matt’s footage will be shown, but it was special for us to have it captured on film! Love, Kelly

I got engaged around this same time (well, actually about a month later) 9 years ago. We were very ambitious and wanted to get married the following summer, and somehow we managed (though it was certainly challenging with less than a year to plan!) I still remember how fun it was deciding on a dress, colors, food, a venue, etc. t didn’t feel like work at all at the time :)
Can’t wait to hear how they surprised you all with the news (though it sounds like it wasn’t TOO much of a surprise for anyone!

And the hands-off relationship that they had during courtship really paid off now I guess – its so precious to see that it really can work and every touch now is probably so special because they waited! They’re a real inspiration to me, I just turned 18 and I’m glad that there are wonderful people who I can look up to!

Oh this is SO exciting! Fall weddings are so beautiful, and I’m not just saying that because I was married in fall. LOL! FYI, October 3 is a great day to get married! (our anniversary. HaHa!) Really, I am so happy to heart this and, like everyone else here, so grateful to be able to witness the Godly example of your family. I too miss seeing you all on TV so I’m glad it sounds like we will all get to see a time or two on the small screen again soon! Yay! I hope that this doesn’t sound strange, but I think often of emailing you as I seek encouragement in my role as wife and mother. I don’t have a lot of women in my life that “get me” or understand many of the decisions my husband and I have made and I know that you could lift me up and offer me so much encouragement. I know how busy you are though and I’m sure that you get a million emails from people like me hoping for the same. If you do ever have time, would be willing to email me? I am struggling quite a bit right now, especially in our homeschooling as we are considering giving it up. Anyway, that went a direction I didn’t intend. Congrats again to the happy couple and I can’t wait for more wedding news and to hear more on Zach and Whitney!
Blessings from Wisconsin!

lol Michael should open a business. (I was the one who asked about the modest bathing wear…which I loved) I will be a bridesmaid to my friend who will be getting married Nov 23, and its sooo difficult finding modest dresses. Congrats Erin and Chad!!! :) God Bless you all!

Reply

Molly August 13, 2013 at 4:06 am

The planning is tons of fun!! My wedding was in the spring (the best timing for us that year), but I think fall weddings are the prettiest!

Another thing to consider for dresses – I thought about ordering custom-designed dresses from band-uniform catalogs (like DeMoulin – https://store.demoulin.com/products/formal-attire/empire-dresses but there are lots of other band-uniform companies). They come in lots of different colors and there are many modest designs. They are pricier than homemade (most of them are $50-60 each), but a lot less expensive than dresses from bridal stores. I ended up getting the dresses for my wedding locally, but I did seriously consider the band-uniform-route for a while!

I was wondering if Erin plans to borrow something from your wedding to wear at hers? Perhaps a piece of jewelry, your veil or dress?
When I was married I had my father’s wedding ring tied onto my bouquet, he passed away when I was a little girl, so it was nice to have that as my “something old”. Enjoy preparing for the wedding!!!

That is so sweet! I hadn’t even thought of anything like that, but it sounds so special! Erin was just in one of her best friend’s wedding and her friend Kelsey’s father passed away just a few months before the wedding. The bride and groom took a picture by his grave and there wasn’t a dry eye!!! He must be smiling in Heaven for his little girl, though. Love, Kelly

They have picked a rental house for their first year while Erin is finishing school. After that, we’ll have to wait and see where the Lord leads them! She is having 3 sisters, plus a flower girl. Some backed out (shyness) and the others were younger. Love, Kelly

Conratulations!!! This is such an exciting time for Erin, Chad and both families. I’m so happy for all of you. Kelly thank you for the info on McCloud Mt., we have been living in east Tn for 2 yrs, so we love learning about new places to visit. We live over in Sevierville, off of Chapman Hwy. so it would be an easy trip. We met a family at a garden show, the Burgraffs from Tazewell, who told us that Gil is now preaching, more exciting news. Will he do the ceremony for Chad and Erin? Well enjoy every minute, this will be such a sweet time with your beautiful daughter. Your family is always a blessing, thank you for being a wonderful example of a godly woman.

Dear Kim,
Go to McCloud Mtn for lunch (You have to call for reservations) then be sure to drive a mile further to the Chimneys! Unbelievable views! You’ll love it! Yes, Henry and Peggy have been dear friends for 22 years! Gil will do the charge for Erin and Chad, but another pastor will do the vows so Gil can give Erin away! Love, Kelly

I had a question which I hope I can recieve help on. I have been asked to be in my sister-in-law’s wedding as a bridesmaid. She does not follow a path of modesty or know the Lord. She never comes around the family or really talks to us often. However, she will talk to me every once in awhile and I try to be there for her when I can even if I do not agree with all her life choices.
How would you respond to wearing a bridesmaid dress which does not meet your personal standards of modesty? It is too short and no sleeves!! I have chosen for myself a path of modesty which includes skirts and dresses only and modest shirts. Basically the path your girls follow. How do I wear this dress if I do not feel comfortable?

Reply

Kelly September 10, 2013 at 7:39 pm

Dear Liza,
First, realize that it was a huge honor for your sister to try to include you…so be very loving and grateful in all communication. If it is a conviction that you feel the Lord has asked you to make, you must honor Him…but remember not to sound judgmental of anyone who doesn’t share your conviction. Try to put yourself in your sister’s shoes when you talk to her. First express your gratitude and your love, next try making an appeal…maybe ask if you can wear a sweater, or explain your conviction and ask if there is another role you could have to make her feel like you love her. My sisters never had my same convictions, but they’ve always been respectful and understanding…and I think the world of them. I love them and don’t expect to change them, and vice versa. There have been times I’ve maybe not been able to go to the same places, but since they knew how much I love them and since they in turn respected my choices, there was not any huge conflict that I can remember. If you let your sister hear your heart in a way that is not condemning and that is caring of her, I think she will be just as understanding. Love, Kelly

Congratulations to Chad and Erin! I just got recently engaged to the love of my life a month ago and plan to marry him in December! Your family is such a huge inspiration and love reading your blogs! About a few years ago, I gave my love life to the Lord and dedicated myself to strengthen my relationship with Him and trust Him with His timing. Although I grew up in a conservative Christian household, my parents never pressured us to court. They allowed us to decide for ourselves what we felt was right. Although both my older siblings went the dating route, they managed to find Godly spouses, whereas I was constantly getting my heart broken. After reading the Bible for answers, God spoke to me one night and whispered “Trust me”. I sat up and started praying, tears rolling down my cheek, asking Him to help me better my relationship with Him in order to help me find a Godly husband. The Lord answered my prayers and blessed me with the most loving and respecting man. My family adores him and I love him to pieces! The fiancé and I decided to wait until engagement to hold hands and hug, however, we’re also waiting until our wedding day to kiss!

I’m so excited for you and your family! I’m sure this is a joyous occasion and a huge learning experience with the wedding planning and everything :) . Since Chad and Erin are engaged now, are there any talks on when Zach is popping the question to Whitney? I’m sure your children are eagerly waiting for that day as well :)

This is a little off topic but I was just wondering what Tori and Trace and doing/planning on doing now they are coming to the end of their home-schooling? Are they aiming to attend college as well, work, begin businesses? Congratulations to Erin and Chad [and I hope all is going well for Alyssa and John and Zach and Whitney]. Thanks for sharing your lives so openly, I really appreciate the effort you put into you blog and the comments/answers section. Your heart for others is obvious, and even though I don’t always agree with your views 100% [how boring would the world be if we all agreed on everything?!] your kind and sincere manner of conveying them makes me respect them and consider them so much more. All the best to you and your family :)

Another admirer from SE Ohio. (Would be interesting if everyone included in their comments where they live…just for kicks.) Since Gil is a pastor now, will he be performing the ceremony? But just thought of something. How would he walk Erin down the aisle? Also, will Erin be asking any of the Duggar young ladies to be her attendant?

Reply

Kelly August 26, 2013 at 2:38 am

Dear Terese,
She’s having another pastor do the vows and Gil do the charge. Well, her problem with bridesmaids is that she has too many friends and sisters! She’s sad to leave anyone out, yet she doesn’t want a huge row of attendants. That’s a difficult decision! Love, Kelly

Congratulations to the happy couple! I hope once they set a date, they also focus on picking a good honeymoon spot. I think people focus too much on the wedding and reception. While those things are important, I think people should spend more time on the honeymoon. After all this is their opportunity to get to know each other alone without a chaperone. I wasn’t able to have a honeymoon for various reasons and both my husband and I lament the fact we didn’t. Personally think a cabin by a lake would have been nice. The solitude and quiteness and being in nature. I know a lot of couples go camping, I’m not the biggest fan of camping. The reason is I work hard for my money and pretending I’m homeless on my time off isn’t appealing. A cabin though with a nice bed and indoor plumbing sounds really nice. Anyway just wanted to say congrats and to stress the importance of making sure they plan for a honeymoon.

Reply

Kelly August 26, 2013 at 2:46 am

Dear Sara,
Thanks for the advice! I agree…people will forget the food that was served and such, but photos and honeymoon memories will last a lifetime! PS…It’s never too late for that honeymoon! Gil and I cut corners so much that we regretted not putting more emphasis on that occassion…so we’ve tried to make up for it by keeping the flames alive! We may not always go fancy places, but we do take time for each other! So start planning a make-up honeymoon and let go of all the regrets! Love, Kelly

Congrats again to Erin and Chad! Completely unrelated, but I am desperate for any ideas on how to homeschool and keep littles busy! I have an 8, 6, and 5 year old that is being homeschooled. I also have a 3 and 2 year old and a 1 month old that LOVES being held ALL OF THE TIME! :) I feel so often like my children are not learning because I’m constantly being interrupted. Any help or advice on how you did it when all you had were small ones would be greatly appreciated.

Reply

Kelly September 10, 2013 at 7:15 pm

Dear T. Gates,
I tried to get my little ones used to being held and being put down to play…an imbalance either way can be difficult. Some children aren’t held and cuddled enough, in my opinion…and at the same time, some children aren’t able to develop their creativity by being able to be put down to play. Try having a play station nearby, so the children feel secure by having you in sight, but have plenty of options to entertain and discover as well. Have bouncy seats, swings, crawl mats, toys, coloring books, educational DVDs, educational toys. Also remember, little kids love playing together! Many days my 3 or 4 yr old would entertain my little guys and they’d all have a blast in the process. Take breaks, while school aged kids go potty, run around the yard to get some energy out, or get a snack, go pick up the little ones and roll around on the floor with them some! Also take advantage of nap time. A good friend, Meghan Dempster, taught me to call it “book time” for the older nappers who might put up a fuss about napping. Her advice works, give them some books in bed and tell them its their time to rest and read! Mine get a prize if they have good book time! This can give you a good two hours lf quiet! If they sit at the table and high chair for snack time when they wake, you’ve just gained another 20 minutes! If you’re blessed to have lots of little ones, you’ll be surprised how long they’ll play together happily if you give them a chance! Love, Kelly

Congratulations. I got married 8 weeks ago and my only advise is to keep taking steps back and taking your day all in. Time flew by, it felt like our wedding ceremony only lasted 10 minutes in fact it was 30. My mums advise was to make sure myself and my now husband just had 10-15 minutes to ourselves to take in the day. I thought it was a strange piece of advise as we would have our whole lives to be together, but I am now glad that we followed her advise.

Congratulations again xx

Dear Mrs. Bates,

First off let me say congratulations to Erin and your family on the engagement! Its such a blessing to add a godly young man to your family. Second, would there be any possibility of Erin writing a post about her courtship and engagement? I’m a little younger than Erin (I’m 19) and attending Bible college. It would be really encouraging to a lot of young women like myself who’s parents aren’t encouraging courtship. Your family, like the Duggars have been such an encouragement to me as I grow in in my walk with the Lord while my parents are not believers. Thank you for your ministry!

After the foundation of piano, they were able to pick up other instruments more easily. Several played violin on their own, but we eventually took some lessons, because they picked up some bad habits for bowing, posture, etc. Love, Kelly

We were so disappointed that you will not have a second season. So, we continue to keep up with you via this blog. We are from small-town Illinois, but currently live in Israel. My husband and I have 6 children who are all homeschooled, and we have the same philosophy as you….We will let the Lord decide how many He chooses to give us. Most people think we are crazy. You really should pray about writing a book (or two!) To encourage and educate is your calling and you can really make difference in many, many lives. I know I would buy it! If you need any ideas for bridesmaids dresses (or dresses in general) go to “eSHakti.com” They have quite a few really nice dresses and tops as well as a small selection of bridesmaids dresses. The nice thing about this company is that they custom make all their clothes especially for you. For $7 you can give them your exact measurements and they’ll fit it to you. Lots of the clothes on the website are too short, don’t have sleeves, or are too low, but they also have a free option of adding sleeves, length, changing the neckline, etc. They aren’t terribly cheap (most dresses are between $40 and $80), but there are “buy one get one free” deals, and plenty of “$25-30 dollar off” coupons and other deals. (They also have a whole page of overstocks and sale items that are pretty inexpensive if you find it at the right moment) Congratulations to both of them!

Dear Kaelah,
Yes, she chose a company that makes to order also, because she wanted to lengthen them. Her wedding dress had to be altered as well, adding sleeves and making the top and back taller. Love, Kelly

Hi Kelly! This is a little off topic, but I was just wondering which program/curriculum the older kids are graduating from for high school. Do they take the GED as well? Or will they have a high school diploma from a homeschool program? Thanks in advance, and I apologize if you have already answered this question :)

Dear Kate,
We are registered with a Christian school, so they test annually with them and receive a diploma. Love, Kelly

Hi Mrs Bates

I was so happy to see that Erin has found her prince charming. Chad seems like a wonderful gentleman and a true blessing in Erin’s life. I am anxious to see the wedding photos. I just wanted to wish them nothing but the best.
Many Blessings !

Sincerly,
Holly

Dear Lauren,
You don’t know how much that means. We know she does not have long here on this earth, but I will never forget the short time I was with her. She is a Godly lady, and the Paines are so blessed to have that heritage! I do hope she’ll be able to see the wedding. I’d love to just put on freeze on time and sit at her feet to listen to her stories and witness the love of Christ in her life! Love, Kelly
