Update on Michael

by Kelly on June 25, 2013

This past March Michael spent a few days in Michigan with our friends, the Keilens! Michael was so encouraged by the love they consistently show in caring for their grandmother, who lives with them. She was also overwhelmed by the attention they showered her with in shopping, sightseeing, special treats, and wonderful fellowship.

In July, Michael will be travelling again! This time to El Salvador and Honduras… thanks to an incredible ministry trip  the Duggars invited her to attend. They will be serving in orphanages for 10 days. She is so grateful for this opportunity to work with children in an entirely different part of the world!

She answers to both Michaella and Michael! Love, Kelly

But what did you name her? Michael? Or Michaela? I’ve always pronounced the female version Mi-kay-la.

Reply

Kelly July 30, 2013 at 11:17 pm

Dear Jamie,
We actually pronounced Michaella like the male version Michael with “uh” sound on the end (thus the two “L’s”). Love, Kelly

I’m so happy for Michael! I bet she will enjoy her mission trips. Any chance she is going with the Duggars because a courtship is in the air? Like with John-David…? Whatever happens I think she will be a great wife and mother to whoever. God Bless!

Dear Mary,
No courtship news… Actually, it is a group of girls going and Jana Duggar is coordinating the plans. Love, Kelly

Dear Kelly,
it is so nice to see how your family always celebrates a welcome home party with gifts, cake, fun when somebody gets home. A very nice tradition! We don’t do something like that and thats SO sad. I am going to start having a party when one of my family members will get back home.
All the best to Michaela on her journey. May the Lord be always with her.
Love from Sonja to all of you!!!

She has become such a beautiful woman. Look forward to hearing how her mission trip goes. My husband and I are interested to start doing mission work down the road, yet we are in our season of having and raising babies. Do you know how or where we can go to open our home to missionaries? We want to open our home but we don’t really know how to begin that. Having 4 daughters has opened our eyes to teaching them hospitality skills. Thank you Kelly.

Kelly June 27, 2013 at 10:29 pm

Dear Blair,
Usually churches have missionaries travel through from time to time, so they can share the work the Lord is allowing them to do. If you let your church know you are interested in helping host them, I’m sure they’d be delighted and you’d be blessed! There are also missions conferences you can attend. reading missionary biographies will stir your heart. Don’t forget serving right where you are is great preparation for future mission work…Visit nursing homes, soup kitchens, and be ready to work in your church, your neighborhood, etc. Love, Kelly

I see she went to Frankenmouth and Bronners. Both places I love! So many ornaments to choose from. The children in El Savador are so lucky yo have her or 10 days.

Dear Kelly,

Michael is my favourite of all of your daughters. They are all beautiful inside and out – ha, with a gene pool like that it’s not really hard to create stunningly beautiful children! – but there’s something about Michael that makes me feel an immense amount of love towards her despite the fact that I do not know her personally.

Michael has such a huge, huge heart that I wonder how can her body contain it. Her soul is pure, she is the biggest giver that I have seen in fundie circles. She just loves to give, give and give. And she does that ever so selflessly just because she feels good by being a caring young woman. She just cares. Not for worldly or other-worldly rewards. Not for “awwww”s and “ohhhh”s from people, not for praises. Giving and caring is her nature. She is an amazingly good person. She is a wonderful spirit and you can be really proud of her. She must be well-loved, and I bet she brightens up everyone’s day without even trying to draw attention to herself. She is a beautiful angel who moves around ever so quietly, touching people’s hearts. We need more people like her because 5 minutes with a person like miss M can restore anyone’s faith in humanity! Cheers and hugs to Michael. I cannot believe that such people exist.

Dear Kelly,

Is there any chance you wold consider creating a cookbook of all the recipes you must prepare regularly for your large family? I have a small family; but love to entertain and never feel confident on what to serve a large group. I tend to have steaks on the grill, hamburgers/hotdogs or chili-I’d love some tried and true different meals!!! Thank you :)

Dear Pam,
I’m afraid if I made a cookbook, you wouldn’t want it…lol! Several people have recommended the Pioneer Woman Cookbook, although I’ve not seen it. I love Taste of Home magazines too! When company comes I cook things that stretch cheaply like chili, spaghetti, chicken casserole, chicken alfredo, chicken pot pie, bar-b-q chicken or roast beef sandwiches, etc. Love, Kelly

I just realized reading through the comments no one has seemed to ask about Michaella nanny job and who is covering for her. I guess I think about these types of things since my child is in preschool/daycare situation. When my person took her vacation this last year she gave me enough warning so I could coordinate with my work schedule. My son and I had a blast being able to spend the time off together. He loves his preschool and I enjoy my work, but it was nice to have a short break. I am sure she will have fun while in Central America. What kinds of projects will they be doing to help the local community down there? Are they going to be culturally sensitive and make sure their project help and do not hinder the community. I only ask because I recently finished reading How the US is Bank Rolling the Taliban: Funding the Enemy, and in one chapter it talked about how American projects often times hurt the local community because not enough research was done in regards to local customs. I think community service wherever it is, is only as good as the research and knowledge one has before going into the project. On a side note when determining college choices for your children why is it some do the College Plus choice and others go to Crown?

Reply

Kelly July 17, 2013 at 5:15 am

Dear Sara,
Michael has so many sisters it was easy to get a sub when she was doing that job. Sadly, the two families she worked for use day care now :( and she misses them greatly! She is always happy to still babysit for special occasions! She began her College Plus again in her spare time and is planning to work with Mother’s Day Out Church Daycare this fall.
In El Salvador and Honduras they are working at orphanages through SOS Ministries. Mike Shadt is very familiar with the culture and laws. He meets with government leaders regularly. We have been so impressed with his work there. He has helped plant several churches. He has worked extensively with the government, the schools, and the orphanages. He adopted a precious daughter from one of the orphanages. He loves the Lord, and he loves the people!
College Plus allows students to advance according to their own pace, so they can easily work jobs, etc. It is self-directed, intense study… then their overall knowledge is tested through college testing. They are able to earn college credit at a fraction of the time and cost. And since the majority is done at home or on-line, they are in an encouraging environment.
Crown is a local Bible college that the kids are able to commute to. It is expensive, since it is private and doesn’t use federal aids or grants. So any of our children attending have to pay their own way…and they pay a lot… abou $3000 a semester to commute and about $5000 or so a semester for on campus (Ours only commute). However the benefits FAR outweigh the costs!! If I had my wish, I wish EVERYONE of my children could go. Why? It is ULTRA conservative…with wholesome music, wholesome dress, Godly atmosphere, GREAT Bible doctrine, and EXCELLENT academics! Crown’s goal is different from most colleges. They don’t just strive for you to cram, pass a test, and graduate…later to forget. Their goal is for you to be able to learn it for yourself, then go past that, and be able to teach it to others. That is the focus in every class! We have found that many home school students are VERY strong in character, but are VERY poor in Bible doctrine. Our children that go there are challenged and strengthened spiritually. They bring it home and we’re all growing from it! On Monday nights this fall they’ll be offering Bible doctrine classes for people who want to learn the Bible lessons, but not earn a degree… which means a GREATLY reduced cost. The cost is $25 per class or $65 for all 3! Mr. Tim Tomlinson, the teacher, is one of our children’s favorite teachers there! Love, Kelly

As a college graduate from a mainline college I have to take contention with this a statement. The truth is if this is all the student desires to do this is all they will recieve in the university/college environment. During my college experience I was expected to develope the ability to ascertain, retain and further extrapolate on many topics. I had to stretch my mind and use creative energy in ways which still amaze me looking back. One professor in particular taught several classes I took for creative poetry writing and one for Biblical literature and history. This professor had such talent I was in constant amazement. To give you an idea of his abilities as a writer he had a poem connecting Rembrandt’s Doubting Thomas painting to the violent death of his father as a teenager. The writing was so fluid and every word chosen to invoke such depth of feeling in the writer. While in his classes he forced me to make my own poetry have extended meaning and depth with his keen ear and eye. If you want to get an idea of his writing abilities check out Bruce Beasley on Google. Copies of his books are available for a reasonable price through Powell’s. I know one of your kids loves to read if she ever happens to make it to Portland, the first stop for any book lover bar none is Powell’s. The bookstore is the largest independent book store in the nation and takes up half a city block.

Reply

Kelly August 11, 2013 at 5:25 am

Dear Beanie,
Thank you… We share our convictions with our children throughout their life. Our desire would be that they would choose similar convictions, but our love for them is not based on that. We know that each child must decide what they believe in their own hearts at some point as they mature. Some may draw the line more lenient, some may draw the line more strict…but we feel that if they really love God and focus on their relationship with Him, not just on outward standards, then He can guide them to what His will is for them. Michael has been an example to us all in both her outward, and more importantly, inward commitments. Love, Kelly

Michael is such a precious person and child of God. The Bible clearly teaches that if one knows Jesus, trusts and obeys Him, he can be assured that his heart’s desires will be granted. A bright future awaits her just as she has a bright present. Here is the little secret a lot of people don’t know: IN JESUS is peace and joy regardless of circumstances. Let’s all take care that we are in Him (yes, including after being born again.)
