Hi Mrs.Bates, How are you? can you tell me how to pronutce Addee full name because I like how it looks ,but I don’t the pronutiation. Thanks Bye

Kelly June 13, 2013 at 9:04 pm

Dear Jessica,
Add is just like it sounds with a short a sound. (Pronunciation: Add – uh- lee). We spell it Addallee. Most people spell it Addallie, though. we wanted double letters to remind her God gave her a second chance. she was born 4 weeks early with the cord around her neck and I had beta strep. Both of those risks caused her to spend her first few weeks in NICU and we were so grateful she recovered! Her name reminds us each time we say it. We call her Addee and her middle name is hope to remind us God added hope to our lives through this little treasure! Love, Kelly

Thanks for the reply

Susan June 14, 2013 at 5:09 am

Beautiful! I love each of your children’s names! How is the church coming? I have been anxiously awaiting to hear about growth, where you guys are meeting, and of course souls saved :)

Kelly June 17, 2013 at 3:57 am

Dear Susan,
We’ve been so blessed by the families God has brought to our church. We’ve been meeting in Holiday Inn Express’s conference room in Clinton., TN. We’re praying about a building to move to. We’re running between 80 – 100 people at most services. It’s been a huge blessing to us! Love, Kelly

Annalee June 17, 2013 at 5:37 am

Wow! That is great:) Sounds like it’s going really well. May the Lord continue to bless you!

Michael is so pretty! All your children are beautiful, and the light of the Holy Spirit shining from within makes them even more so! I hope my little ones (4 so far) shine the same way when they are older. :)

Val Young June 13, 2013 at 10:49 pm

Forgot to ask, did you get a new computer? I have been praying over this need. I remembered you mentioning yours being down. Would love to know how the Lord answers this prayer

Ina June 14, 2013 at 9:03 am

Hi Mrs. Bates!
Im wondering what your top favorite child raising how to-books are? And where can one purchase them? Thanks in advance! Looks like you are enjoying summer already! It’s cold here! Blessings!

Kelly June 17, 2013 at 3:33 pm

Dear Ina,
As with any resources, there are things we agree with and many things we disagree with. We try to apply what works for us and be willing to overlook the rest. With that being said, there are lots of child training books we read…almost any that we hear about. Keep in mind, though, to evaluate everything by Scripture and make sure you study for yourself to make sure you agree. We highly recommend The Basic Seminar (available online at Another series that was helpful to us was Growing Kids God’s Way by Gary and Anne Marie Ezzo. There have been numerous books by James Dobson, the Duggars, and many others. Love, Kelly

Ina June 28, 2013 at 9:46 pm

Hi Kelly! Thank you so much for replying! Great advice! God bless!

Misty Pray August 29, 2013 at 9:38 pm

I second Embassy Institute! I just began the Basic Seminar last week. What a blessing it was to find that website through the Duggar’s blog!

Kyra June 14, 2013 at 11:12 am

Hi Kelly,
Absolutely wonderful…everyone looks like there having fun, especially Judson with the treats, lol!!

I love that all your children look so much alike, I have Ellie and Oliver that look similar and then Grace and Noah!

Take Care

Madison June 14, 2013 at 5:58 pm

I love to see how close you guys are and how all the fun you have together. I come from a Christian homeschooling family of 8 kids and while its definitely busy around my house I’m sure it’s nowhere near as busy as yours!

Piper June 14, 2013 at 6:26 pm

Ha! That last picture is my favorite ;-) I only have three but they keep me busy and the chance to put my feet up without someone hanging off of me is precious ;-D

Johanna June 14, 2013 at 6:39 pm

Looks like fun :)

Symphony June 14, 2013 at 8:00 pm

Kelly Black June 14, 2013 at 9:11 pm

Great pictures but I see a change in Michael. She’s always been beautiful but she looks GREAT!!!

Kristie June 14, 2013 at 9:16 pm

Looks like you guys had a blast! I do have one thing I would like to ask you. Have you and your husband considered writing a book? My sister and I love following you and your family on your blog and would love to read a book that you might write someday. There is no pretense about your family- just honest, God-loving people and thats encouraging to see. Just a question and thought :)

Kelly June 17, 2013 at 3:46 am

Dear Kristie,
JimBob has tried to encourage us to, but we’re still in the learning stage ourselves…lol! Love, Kelly

Julia June 14, 2013 at 10:14 pm

Awww~so cute! I was just wondering, are you going to continue doing your show?? I was just wondering~sorry if I’m being nosy LOL
I would love to be able to correspond with you guys…
Have Erin and Chad picked a date???

Kelly June 17, 2013 at 3:45 am

Dear Julia,
I don’t believe they are making any current plans to continue the show. Chad and Erin are still praying about dates. Chad was leaning to the first portion of next year…Erin was praying for sooner…like the fall…LOL! No dates are set yet, and they aren’t officially engaged yet…Waiting for just the right timing! Love, Kelly

Julia June 17, 2013 at 10:52 pm

Thanks you Mrs.Bates! I really appreciate the are so sweet!

Julia June 14, 2013 at 11:44 pm

Oh, one more thing…
Do you have any book suggestions? I love reading, but I can’t figure out what else to read :) Thanks!

Kelly June 17, 2013 at 3:23 pm

Dear Julia,
We love to read missionary stories. Some great ones are Evidence Not Seen by Darlene Deibler Rose and Bruchko by Bruce Olsen. Some others are Lords of the Earth by Don Richardson and Eternity in Their Hearts by Don Richardson. Love, Kelly

Julia June 17, 2013 at 10:53 pm

Thank you so, so much! I will check them out!

Annalee June 15, 2013 at 3:34 pm

Alexis June 16, 2013 at 3:04 am

Dear MRs. Bates,

Just wanted to share with you my husband and I were blessed with a baby boy at the end of May; we named him Joseph. I just wanted to thank you and your family for your fabulous example of a family with strong values and ties. I hope to have such a tight, loving family and marriage.

Please tell Michael she looks more radiant every day. I hope Erin’s courtship and Alyssa’s “getting to know each other” processes are going as they feel they are being led to and wish for.

Kelly June 17, 2013 at 3:35 am

Dear Alexis,
So happy to hear of Joseph’s arrival! Love, Kelly

sonjapetersen June 16, 2013 at 11:06 am

Dear Kelly,

very nice photos! Looks like holiday and having lots of fun- enjoy the summertime! How fast have your little ones grown! Judson and Jeb are big boys now and Callie is so adorable. Well done! May the Lord protect you at the water (unfortunately i can’t swim). Take care, love Sonja

Donna June 16, 2013 at 5:30 pm

As usual, you have posted the most beautiful pictures. There are some wonderful photographers in your family. Thank you for sharing your lives with us all. Miss your show. I hope that when Erin and Chad do get married that their wedding can be featured on an episode of “19 Kids & Counting”, or TLC can do a special one-hour episode of United Bates of America, to share their wedding with us, and to show us how much the children have grown since your show aired last year.

One question: How old is Erin and how old is Chad?

Kelly June 17, 2013 at 3:30 am

Dear Donna,
Erin is 22 and Chad is 26. love, Kelly

Nan June 17, 2013 at 1:19 am

Michael is beautiful! I am so curious…how did she get such a beautiful and unusual name? Is she in a courtship yet?

Kelly June 17, 2013 at 3:27 am

Dear Nan,
She is not courting. As a young Christian, I wanted to give her a Bible name. I read a list of women’s names in the Bible and saw David’s wife (spelled “Michal”). Unfortunately, when she was less than a year old, I read through my Bible for the first time and discovered Michal wasn’t a good role model. We legally could change her name for free if we only slightly changed the spelling while she was under a year old. We changed the spelling to Michael, which means “Who is like the Lord,” which she has certainly tried to live up to!! Love, Kelly

Julia June 17, 2013 at 10:57 pm

What a neat story!

Anne June 18, 2013 at 4:10 am

How interesting! I know there was a lot of curiosity about her name until recently when you explained how she came to be named Michael-I thought she was named after Michael Learned who played the Mother on The Waltons! I always felt it to be a unique name for a woman and now there are 2 women I “know” who have the name. Nice to know that she is going by her real name!

Pi September 18, 2013 at 3:55 am

One of my best friends, her middle name is Michael. Named after her father. It’s so unique and such a blessed name. :)

Pam A. June 17, 2013 at 8:38 pm

It’s really fun to see pics of you and your family having summer fun!!!

Ruthie June 18, 2013 at 3:36 am

Oh my when I saw you on 19 Kids and Counting, I thought Michael’s name was Michaela! However I thought it was pronounced like Michael but with an a at the end. The lake looks so much fun, hope to meet y’all one day, looks like spending a day with you would be like tons of fun! Anyway, speaking about names, how did you come up with Lawson, Judson and Jeb?

Kelly June 18, 2013 at 3:48 am

Yes, we did start calling her Michaella when she was around 5, because on cards people didn’t realize it was referring to a girl. Zach picked Lawson’s name; he had been praying for a brother. Judson and Jeb were picked for their meaning. Judson was after the missionary Adoniram Judson and the hymn writer Judson Van DeVenter who wrote “All to Jesus I Surrender.” Judson means “Son of the praised one!” Jeb means “Beloved friend of God.” Love, Kelly

Ruthie June 19, 2013 at 3:47 am

I think that meanings are important when naming a child. I really love the meanings of Judson and Jeb!

If y’all ever visit central Florida, I would love to meet you all!

Meg June 18, 2013 at 5:46 am

Nathan is so good looking. God spent a
little extra time on him. :) Is he courting anyone? I
love your family!

Tashia June 18, 2013 at 7:35 pm

Looks like you all had a lot of fun!

Liza Jane June 19, 2013 at 6:51 pm

Great pictures!!! I was thinking how different Michael looks from your TV show! What is she doing different? She looks great….well she was always pretty and always my favorite of your kids, so sweet. Any summer plans? Your family is a constant encouragement to me. My husband and I are currently praying and trying for our second child to join his sweet 10 month old brother. Pray for my paitence and faithfulness for God’s timing…cause I am ready! Much love!

Kelly June 19, 2013 at 9:47 pm

Dear Liza,
I think she watched her sugar intake and began eating lots of salads and broccoli. She started doing her makeup a little different and got slight layered tapering in her hair, so she wears it down more often. She’s got a heart of gold and is such a friend to so many! She never thinks of herself! Love, Kelly

Jacqueline June 21, 2013 at 9:14 pm

Looks like lots of fun!

Alina June 27, 2013 at 1:54 am

Your girls are so beautiful! Michael, Carlin, and Katie look so much alike, and it seems Addee is beginning to look just like them.

I do not have the same beliefs as your family, but you and your husband seem to be great parents. I also like your parenting style more than that of similar families (Zsuszanna Anderson especially, with her hateful attitude), and your kids seem so happy and normal. I do hope though that your children are allowed a little “Wiggle room” to be typical strong willed, stubborn kids, and that they’re allowed to portray negative emotion without being punished or scolded. My own father, while not particularly religious, wanted a “leave it to beaver” type family, so we had to be 100% cheerful all the time, and were not allowed to have “grumpy days.”
