Count Your Blessings

by Kelly on July 14, 2011

Cou12290282nt your blessings; name them one by one…

God in His mercy has allowed us to conceive again! We are thankful and also prayerful for God’s continued protection.

During the last pregnancy at the10 week mark, we discovered our baby had died. We are at the 9 week mark with this pregnancy and have to die daily to fears, instead choosing to trust God’s bigger plan. We know that whatever His will might be is best for His glory and our good, even though sometimes we don’t see the finished puzzle.

So with grateful hearts we are looking to Him for grace and strength during these next few important weeks of growth for the baby!

Our kiddies are ages 8, 6, 4, 2 and another in September. We lost baby #4, who would have been born after the 4 year old. I was at 12 weeks gestation when we lost the baby. It was our first miscarriage, and hopefully our last. When the Lord gave us the next, who is now 2, I remember being so much more apprehensive. Even with the baby who is due in September, I find myself being mindful of every discomfort. It really changes your perspective.

Praying for your health and safety in this pregnancy. :-)

Dear Kelly: I’m happy to know that you are pregnant again, that great blessing that has come from heaven, God gave us his time, a balm to our lives, after your previous loss, the longer you have your blessed again, because it says the word in Psalms: blessed is he who fills his albajaba of children …. Praying for the baby to develop normally and reach your pregnancy to term. He is losing a child, it happened to me just like you some years ago, I lost a pregnancy of 5 months, growth slowed and it was over, was a very difficult for me and my husband, we were so heartbroken but God gave us words of encouragement and we move forward, came after other children, but that baby will always be in our hearts, will be waiting in the heavenly home that God has prepared for all of us who believe in his Son Jesus Christ as our only savior . Blessings and peace in the Lord.

Your family is such an inspiration and a sign of encouragement for me. I live in an area where 2 kids is the “perfect family” and I have no support from my own family. We currently have 3 wonderful kids and have decided to let the Lord control our family size. I am so excited for you and will keep your family in my prayers!

Congratulations Kelly! I was so sad to hear about the loss of your last baby, especially as my closest friend has also recently experienced 3 miscarriages in a row, so will be waiting anxiously to hear how you get on this time. May the Lord bless and protect you. I agree that children are a blessing and as a newly wed I am praying that the Lord will bless me with children soon: it’s hard to wait! It’s hard to reconcile ourselves to a plan that we can’t see or understand sometimes. I wonder if you could explain what you mean when you say you ‘die daily to fears’?
Love,
Hannah

Reply

Gil July 14, 2011 at 8:20 pm

Dear Hannah,
The phrase “Die daily to fears’ is one that we heard in a sermon once explaining how often fears hinder us from trusting God or from serving God. God’s perfect peace can help us replace our fears with Godly desires. For instance, one preacher said, “Instead of fearing that your house might catch on fire and your children might be harmed as a result… Use that as a prayer request that your children be “On fire for the Lord” o(that they might be fervent and zealous in serving Him).” Fear can criple us and cause us to avoid venturing out into new areas that make us feel uncertain or at risk. So, dying to my fears means that I recognize my weakness and I say, “Lord, I put this in your hands… Help me trust your will.” Love, Kelly

Congratulations!!! You and your family will be in our prayers. I am so inspired by your family (as well as the Duggars). I actually just met the Duggar family when they came to our town for a book signing recently…they are the sweetest people! I am just curious if it was hard to share the news with Michelle, even though I know you will get tons of encouragement and love from her…only because I am sure they have hopes to have at least one more. Thank you for taking the time to answer questions! May God richly bless you!!

Reply

Gil July 15, 2011 at 5:20 pm

Dear Joy,
The Duggars are very special people… They have learned to be content in whatever God’s will is for their life… This assurance and peace allows them to be able to rejoice with others over good news. They don’t fall prey to the trap of envy and bitterness that often results from comparisons. We have learned much from their faith and trust! When we first met, we had one more child than they did, but it was news for rejoicing when they passed us up. God has a plan for each of us. We tell our children, you’ll have different size houses, different size families, different talents, and different circumstances… learn to rejoice with one another and learn to be content with your own lot in life. We’ve shared our heartaches with the Duggars and they’ve encouraged us. Likewise, we’ve shared our good news and they’ve equally encouraged us! we are thankful for their friendship and example. And we too are praying for God’s will in their lives and hope to be able to rejoice with them and others if God allows their family to grow! I just started reading their new book and can’t stop crying through it over the testimony of their faith and over God’s goodness to all of us – through good times and bad times! Love, Kelly

If you don’t mind my asking, I was wondering if you have experienced any c-sections with your children’s births? Very happy for you. We have 4 children and are expecting #5 in September. We lost 2 babies in Aug 2009 and Feb 2010 due to a low progesterone problem. We sought out a new dr who would address the problem and God allowed us to conceive in Jan 2011. This time around I am taking progesterone supplements to help this pregnancy continue. We are currently at 30 weeks, she’s a healthy little girl. Kaitlyn Jade will join us in September. We feel very blessed and we wish a good pregnancy and healthy delivery for you too.

I’m so happy for you. We have 7 children and another due on Christmas Day, but this is my 13th pregnancy. It’s hard to lose one, but when the next one is on the way I’ve found it does help a little to replace some of that grief and loss with excitement and hope. I heard the baby’s heartbeat yesterday for the first time (at 16 weeks)… and I realized that even after the last 4 successful pregnancies I still worry just a little more because I’ve had some losses (3 in a row once)… but hearing that heartbeat was WONDERFUL. I always keep reminding myself, yes, 1 in 5 pregnancies are lost, but that still means that 4 out of 5 pregnancies result in a beautiful healthy baby, and that is very likely what you are going to be holding in the new year, so congratulations :)

I am constantly thinking of you and the Duggars and find myself saying with a grin- ” What would Kelly do?” Heehee! I laugh at myself at the irony of asking this question when I have yet to meet you, but feel as though we know you and love you as though you were our next door neighbors. We have 5 beautiful daughters who range in age from 28-10, however we have 3 precious babies that are with the Father that we didnt get to hold. We lost each of them in between the girls. The pain of not getting to physically hold those babies has been there but we’ve been able to rest in the peace that God has a plan. I dont know if you did or not, but we named our babies. We found it helped in the healing & in placing them in our family for our girls. I hope that as this baby grows so will your resting in the Father for peace!
May God bless you!

Dear Robyn,
Yes, we chose names that related to hymns so that we could have a song in our heart in spite of pain. We’ve actually had 3 misscarriages. The first two occured only one week after a positive pregnancy test and before realizing that my progesterone levels needed monitoring. The last and most recent misscarriage occured between weeks 8 to 10 even though we were using progesterone supplements. The first name we chose was Jewels after the hymn “Precious Jewels.” The second was named Jubilee after a Bible chorus “This is the year of Jubilee.” The most recent baby was named Zion after the hymn “We’re Marching to Zion.” Love, Kelly

I was just thinking that I’m sure your family had read the Duggars’ second book and the wonderful quote in it “God’s will is what we would choose if we had all the facts”. I have also greatly appreciated your testimonies either on the show or through this amazing blog, in posts or your kind answers.
I have a little brother, waiting to meet me in heaven, and even now – some 35 years later, I have times of grief. But I know one day I will meet him – and that has to help. I also remember my Mum’s fears during the following pregnancy – after which she became a Christian and encouraged me also.
Thank you for sharing your testimonies with us – you are like beacons of light, showing us ways to the One who shines brightest. It is so helpful, and received with much love

Dear Chris,
The Duggars just gave us a copy today. We are reading it aloud and are on chapter 4. It’s hard to put down! We’ve cried all the way through it. As we look across the room at the smiles on JimBob’s and Michelle’s faces and we watch little Josie toddle all over the room, we can’t help but realize that “It Will Be Worth it All!” Love, Kelly

Has your doctor given you progesterone for all of your pregnancies? I had 2 miscarriages before my oldest, so when I was pregnant with him my doctor gave me progesterone. I was not given any with my daughter though. Naming them after songs beautiful way to honor God and the remembrance of their lives!

Gil July 16, 2011 at 4:14 am

Dear Susan,
No, I never had to take progesterone before my first 2 misscarriages. I have taken it with Callie-Anna, Judson, Zion (The recent baby we misscarried), and with this pregnancy. Love, Kelly

Dear Kelly, I want to thank you for addressing the alleged competetion between the Duggars and the Bates, not only about the amount of children each of you have, but on any level. That is such an insult to the integrity I have witnessed with both families. I don’t pretend I know the Duggars on the basis of 23 minutes a week, but I can see what they, and you, stand for and believe. Wanting the same thing that someone else has is not a sin, but wanting or begrudging them that same possession is most definately wrong. That’s the difference between I’d like to have a blue dress like yours and I want YOUR blue dress. Michelle might wish that she was pregnant, as well, but she wouldn’t ever begrudge you a child. It is maddening to read such nasty comments elsewhere, and I am very glad people who respond to your postings are not the type to do that. By the way, I am NOT referring to Joy who responded to you, I am talking about other websites. Glad to hear that little Josie is walking. That poor little gal got off to a rough start and she seems such a happy baby now. Kay

We, too, have experienced loss (at 18 weeks pregnant). It was our first sterilization reversal baby. She was still fearfully and wonderfully made as we held her. The Lord taught us to apply the Scripture words of Hannah from First Samuel 1:27:
“For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of Him.”
We are praying for your precious blessing being formed.

Congratulations! I understand the fear all too much. I had one child, no problem. My second pg I thought was ok, only to find out when he was 2 days old that he had a bad heart. (He later died when he was 3 weeks old). I tell you, I did NOT enjoy my next pg *at all*. I was scared/fearful every single day that our newest little one would die too. I was miserable, but only b/c I allowed fear to rule me. But praise the Lord, he turned out perfectly fine. My 4th and last pg ended in miscarriage at 15 weeks, so my odds of getting pg/staying pg/delivering healthy babies are only about 50% sadly. We so wanted a large family, and I still long for more children-so hopefully we will adopt at some point. (still praying/hoping God will speak to my husband about that. He knows I feel strongly about it, and I think he would too, but we don’t have a lot of $$).

Anyway, I hope I wasn’t a downer! It really opens your eyes about what an absolute miracle children are once you’ve lost a child. I knew children were priceless, but once I lost one, I *really* realize just how priceless and precious they really are.

I’m praying for you Kelly (and Gil :)) and for your newest little one. May God protect you all, and in Feb I pray you’ll be holding a new healthy little one.

I have a name suggestion. In a posting about you all celebrating the forth of july with family it made me remember a nameing tradition that once existed in myu family. My great-great-great-grandfather named Isaiah Manuel Corley decided to name some of his sons after US Presidents. My great-great-grandfather was named after William Henry Harrison and his son my great-grandfather was named after Grover Cleveland. I have always loved that fact. So it was just a thought if your baby is a boy.

I will be praying for you and your little one over the next few weeks and months! My husband and I are so thankful for your testimony as well as the Duggars’. We both felt the Lord speak to us about the use of birth control and being open to a large family. We talked together one night and we both were surprised to hear what the other had to say- this was not in our “plan” for our lives!! We are trusting in God to provide physically and financially over the years and your family has shown us that by trusting in the Lord, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Congrats again!

Congratulations on the news of another small blessing!! I have always wanted a large family, but was told that I couldn’t have anymore children after my third c-section. That saddened me, and the doctor told me that a tubal was my best option. I want to praise you for raising such a large family in a society that doesn’t always “agree” with that!! Doctors sometimes want to play god by telling women how many children they should or should NOT have. Thank you allowing us to see your family through this page as well on Duggar shows!! God bless each one of you…all the way from Arkansas!!!

What a blessing! And for Kelly, what an inspiration you have been to me. I miscarried a baby last January after my husband and I had been praying and “trying” for nearly 4 years. We were devastated and felt very “cheated”. But after reading your comments about your little angels and watching you and Michelle D. on TV, I feel very encouraged by you both. We MUST trust in God’s bigger plan even though (as you so perfectly put it) we may not see the finished puzzle. We are currently taking fertility medication and hoping and praying like crazy that God will have mercy on us and allow us to begin our own family. Thank you Thank you Thank you for being a wonderful woman, wife, mother and inspiration as to the woman that I desire to be. Best of luck and all my prayers are with you and the newest Bates baby! Hi Gil and Kelly,
If you could not have children naturally due to a known medical issue would you ever consider In Vitro Fertilization?

Reply

Gil August 2, 2011 at 2:55 pm

Dear Allison,
That is something you’ll have to seek the Lord for an answer for. I personally have not been down that road and have not considered it, and after reading about do not think it would be an option for us, but I would spend MUCH time in prayer and talk to your husband to find what your path should be!!! God gives the best direction!! Adoption is an option to pray about.
There was a young girl who had medical troubles… the doctors mistakenly removed her ovaries without cause which meant she could not have children. She was faced with having to overcome the temptation to be bitter at the doctors, and instead she focused on accepting that God let it happen. She invested her youthful years in ministering to her younger siblings along with many other children. God gave her an incredible wisdom to communicate with and to captivate the minds of these small children. She became so good at it that others sought her for training on how to teach children. The homeschool group we are a part of had her speak to 20,000 parents giving them tips on how to teach more effectively. At the close of the week the fruits of her labor were seen as the thousands of children were gathered to demonstrate what they had learned from this energetic teen. She ended up travelling all over the world to work with parents, teachers, children, and world leaders. God had enlarged her ministry to work with a vast number of children. She could not have her own, but she impacted so many!! Love, Kelly

Thank you Kelly! Tears of shear joy and greatfulness to God cannot stop flowing! For a little while there, my husband and I thought that maybe we were not worthy of God’s mercy because we had strayed from his path in our late teens. When speaking with our pastor about this, she literally laughed at us and our “plans and supposed insight” as to what God had in store for us. This is just another testimony that God is great and it is our duty to remain faithful no matter what. I hope all is well with you, please keep us all updated as to how you are feeling. By the way, I love the photos from Gil’s Chalk talk. A very cool spin on a powerful message.

I’m so EXCITED!!! I kept hoping and praying you’d be able to have another baby! I really needed to see God provide this for your family and I’m so thankful that you’re willing to share this with all of us–all of it. Though I don’t really know you, your stories of your family has been such a blessing to me. May God give you many more blessings–children and/or otherwise–throughout your lives and the lives of your children right on down through the generations to follow.

I am so happy for your entire family!! You all are such an amazing and beautiful family. I can relate to what Kelly has been going through. My husband and I have been married for almost 2 1/2 years and in that time I have had 3 miscarriages. It is the hardest thing I have ever walked through. The only thing that keeps me going is knowing that God is in control and that he works ALL things for the good of those that love the Lord. Today I took a pregnancy test and it was POSITIVE! So, we’re just praying everything goes well and we can finally hold our baby in our arms. God bless you all!
