The Bates Family

by Kelly on July 9, 2011

Erin had surgery on her hand this past Wednesday. Erin plays the piano with vigorous enthusiasm, so we’ve had quite a few visits to our favorite hand doctor (Dr. Calhoun from Knoxville Orthopedic)!

She is in a cast, so she can’t play the piano for a few weeks… which is probably the hardest part for her…  But Dr. Calhoun is confident she’ll be back to normal soon! We are grateful for his expertise!! 12290047

Dear Erin,
I will be praying for an easy and pain-free recovery for you. Thank you for sharing your music with us all and I look forward to many more recordings. Yours in Christ,

Annette July 9, 2011 at 5:32 pm

Was it for carpal tunnel?? Praying all goes well and she gets back to her piano(but she still has the other hand so I am sure she will be tinkering!) and hopefully she can get some pointers on therapies to avoid aggravating it in the future!!

Gil July 9, 2011 at 7:31 pm

Dear Annette,
It was to remove a tendon in her pinky, which had become stiff and difficult to use. Thank you for your concern! Love, Kelly

Wow. I will be praying for quick recovery! She looks all beautiful in her hospital bed there :) She will be playing again before you know it! VERY soon I need to purchase one of Erin’s CDs. I heard a small clip of her playing and it is beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

Denise July 9, 2011 at 8:51 pm

may God grant her a speedy recovery.

Juanita July 9, 2011 at 9:05 pm

Oh my; what a pain! I too would find it difficult to not be able to play piano, or write or type or, well, even work. Was it her dominant hand? Praying for a quick recovery as well.

Gil July 10, 2011 at 8:19 pm

Dear Juanita,
Yes, it was her right hand, but she has handled it all so well! Love, Kelly

Kay W July 9, 2011 at 9:06 pm

Everyone will miss Erin’s playing while her finger heals, which I pray is soon. Love, Kay

aria July 9, 2011 at 9:27 pm

Wishing Erin a quick and uneventful recovery!

Brenda July 9, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Praying for a speedy recovery for Erin! How long will she be in the cast? God Bless!

Gil July 10, 2011 at 8:18 pm

Dear Brenda,
The cast comes off in 2 weeks and stitches will be removed then. Love, Kelly

Elsa July 9, 2011 at 9:30 pm

I’ve never had surgery, but I don’t imagine it to be fun–praying you have a fast and full recovery, Erin!

Mrs. Bates, can all of your children {of age} play piano/instrument? And did all of your kids have instructors, or did the older ones teach the younger {once they grasped the technique}?

Gil July 10, 2011 at 8:17 pm

Dear Elsa,
They’ve all spent time learning piano. Some have branched out into other areas of interest like guitar, harmonica, and violin. They’ve all had teachers, but Erin has taught all of our piano lessons for the past few years. Love, Kelly

Melody July 9, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Get well soon Erin!

Susan July 10, 2011 at 1:35 am

I will be praying for Erin. I hope she has a quick recovery! Will she have to do any kind of rehabilitation, or is piano playing considered rehab :)

Gil July 10, 2011 at 8:14 pm

Dear Susan,
No rehab and she should be better in a few weeks! Thanks for caring! love, Kelly

Allene July 10, 2011 at 1:48 am

Glad to hear she is on the mend, sending up prayers!! By the way her hair looks amazing for someone having/had surgery…so pretty!!

Judy July 10, 2011 at 1:56 am

Praying for a speedy and complete recovery! : )

Victoria July 10, 2011 at 5:41 am

my mom had a similar surgery a few years ago… years of playing/teaching violin created “trigger points” in her hand which had to be snipped. best wishes to erin for a speedy recovery!

Victoria July 10, 2011 at 5:42 am

and amazing, she still looks so put-together! she certainly looks blissed out on pain meds after the surgery!

Vanessa July 10, 2011 at 7:26 am

Oh, God Bless her! We’re praying for her too! We sure do love her piano playing!

sonja petersen July 10, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Dear Erin,
get well soon! I know that it hurts a lot. I had 2 operations in the right hand. The scars are tiny and my hand is doing fine without pain. I prayed for you at church today.
Love to all Bates, Sonja

Jason, Paddy and Lenka July 10, 2011 at 3:00 pm

We pray for a quick and pain free recovery for you Erin and may the Lord continue to bless your wonderful family.

Carolyn July 10, 2011 at 3:46 pm

Praying for a speedy recovery, Gods Blessig on you and your family.

Teresa Bunch July 10, 2011 at 7:19 pm

Praying for a quick recovery. Thankful everything went well with the surgery. We listen to Erin’s cd at least once every day. She is so talented.

Annette July 11, 2011 at 2:28 am

Thank you for the info! We are praying she has a swift recovery, much better a tendon than carpal tunnel! I take supplements that help with reptitive motion issues. I groom dogs so there is a lot of stress on my hands too! I know how difficult it is to have issues with your hands when you use them every day.

Jennifer L July 11, 2011 at 2:59 am

Get well soon, Erin! Maybe you can sing while you wait for your hand to heal? I once saw an online video clip of your family singing “God Has Been So Good To Me” and you and your sisters harmonized so well together. Wow, your family has truly been blessed with a lot of talent!

Audra July 11, 2011 at 3:05 am

Praying for a fast recovery so that she will be able to play again very soon. God is rejoicing from above that she is healed. By HIS STRIPES SHE IS HEALED!!!!!

Reva July 11, 2011 at 1:11 pm

I will be praying for her also…I know she will be tickling the ivories in no time! : ) Also, I just HAVE to ask…what does she do to get those perfect curls?? I just love Erin’s “glory”!

Johanna Kautt July 12, 2011 at 10:15 pm

I think I could sympathize with Erin. Not that I have had hand surgery or any kind of surgery (I haven’t), but I LOVE play the piano and it’d be hard for me to put that off for a while. I’ll pray that her hand heals quickly and properly!! :)

Gil July 13, 2011 at 2:17 am

Dear Johanna,
Well, she gave in… she arranged a duet for her and Alyssa to play on Sunday that used only her left hand… She couldn’t resist! Love, Kelly

Molly July 13, 2011 at 3:33 am

Dear Erin,
We’re thinking of you and praying for a speedy recovery!
My husband and I are both musicians, so we both really value using our hands. We’ve also both had to have hand surgeries at different times in the past (my husband for a car accident injury and me for a joint problem). It was definitely not fun to not be able to play for a bit, but both of us had 100% recoveries and we’re playing more than ever now! :)

Anna July 13, 2011 at 8:44 pm

I hope Erin gets better soon. I will be praying for her. God Bless

Johanna Kautt July 13, 2011 at 10:53 pm

Mrs. Bates,

I see… :) I suppose I might would too. :) Is she normally right handed (in most of the things she does– writing, eating, etc)?

Nicole Elizabeth July 14, 2011 at 4:09 pm

Your piano playing is amazing!! A friend knows I love the piano & gave me your album. I hope you have plans for many more!
Do you write your own music?

GOD bless & heal fast!

Heather Ferguson July 15, 2011 at 4:50 pm

How is Erin doing and I hope she gets better soon

Gil July 15, 2011 at 5:10 pm

Dear Heather,
She goes to the doctor Monday to remove the stitches and cast. Thanks for asking! love, Kelly

Ava July 16, 2011 at 1:53 am

My sis had hand surgery and she had quite a lot of pain post-op. Do your religious beliefs allow the use of pain medications or do you just have to grin and bear the pain?

Gil July 16, 2011 at 4:18 am

Dear Ava,
We certainly appreciate the wisdom God has given to doctors and we use medications they prescribe (including pain meds when needed). Having 2 children that are EMTs and 1 first responder we see the blessing that pain meds can be when necessary. Fortunately, Erin only had to take a few pills during the first 2 days. We were fortunate to have a wonderful, skilled, Christian doctor. Love, Kelly

Cindy July 16, 2011 at 4:49 am

We bought Erin’s CD for Christmas — what a blessing it is! Praying for her complete restoration. God Bless you all!

Mandi July 19, 2011 at 1:42 pm

How is erin’s recovery? Praying for minimal on-going pain and speedy rehabilitation.

Gil July 19, 2011 at 7:51 pm

Dear Mandi,
She got her cast and stitches off on Monday. She has a small finger splint only, so she can play the piano again! She’s delighted! love, Kelly

Sam July 20, 2011 at 6:52 pm

I hope she recovers quickly!

katie July 20, 2011 at 7:30 pm

i will b praying!!!!!!!!!!! :)
what happened????????? :(

Kari July 22, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Hi Erin,

I was also a serious painist as a teenager and had to have surgery on both elbows. You will be pleased to know that all strength was recovered in my hands and I was able to play again in no time. (Though watch out for Rachmaninoff–that’s how I hurt my elbow!) I hope you are recovering well. Shalom.

Cristina Ciotinga July 23, 2011 at 5:18 am

God bless you Erin! May He heal you completely!

Suzanne July 28, 2011 at 12:07 pm

We know Doug Calhoun! I hope Erin has recovered well!

Dear Erin & Bates Family: I just wanted to write a quick note to tell you all that we are praying for Erin to have a full recovery with her hand. She has been blessed with her musical abilities and I know the Lord will want her to continue down this wonderful journey that she has paved. I just purchased your CD today and have enjoyed listening to the samples on the web page. It is soooo beautiful. All the best always.
Love in Christ,
