The Bates Family

It’s Official!

by Kelly on June 25, 2011

Zach headed for Missouri again! While there, he got up enough courage to ask Sarah Reith to begin a courtship. She graciously agreed and we think he couldn’t have chosen a sweeter, more Godly young lady! We are absolutely thrilled for both of them and pray for God’s direction in their lives!2011-06-23_15.51.19

I’m sure it helps that they have older siblings, so they get to see the whole process. Courtship is fairly new to me, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. God bless your family!

Congratulations to Zach and Sarah! Though, I have to admit, I don’t fully understand the difference between courtship and an engagement. I only know your family through TV and your blog, but I am happy for all of you and truly hope that you continue to be as blessed as you clearly are currently!

Reply

Gil June 28, 2011 at 5:52 am

Dear Karen,
For us, courtship is like a pre-engagement stage. It allows them the chance to get to know each other on a closer emotional level than just getting to know each other on a friendship basis. The difference between dating and courtship is in the goals & commitment involved. Often people date for fun and companionship, but not neccesarily with marriage in mind. They may have dated quite a large number of people before settling down to the person they decide to marry. Courtship comes after spending time with the person and their family and getting to know them enough to sense God’s leading them toward marriage. During courtship they can “date” (We prefer chaperoned time together to avoid temptations that accompany being alone together). Its different from what most people call dating though, because there is a definite plan to move toward engagement and then marriage. Love, Kelly

I don’t pretend to understand the motivation behind your lifestyle, which is somewhat odd to me, but I wish both of them the very best and, should they decide to get married, a happy and contented life.

I’m fascinated by your lifestyle, but you do seem to genuinely love your children, so best of luck to you too.

Greeting from Munich, Germany!

Gil July 8, 2011 at 12:33 am

Dear Britta,
Its funny to hear someone say our lifestyle seems odd, because it seems so usual to us! But I guess we are odd balls! We sure are having a fun life, though… and very rewarding! I don’t think I want to trade places with anyone! Ha! Ha! Lots of love, Kelly

Reply

Britta July 8, 2011 at 7:10 am

Well, no offence intended ;-) . However, your kind of lifestyle would not be possible here (naturally, you can be religious, but a lot of the stuff you do, such as educating at home cannot be done here), so it is both fascinating and strange at the same time. I’m restricted to You Tube when it comes to watching US TV of course, but I do like to follow your wee adventures when I’m able to. Shall look forward to seeing more.

Have a nice weekend.

Reply

Meggie H July 9, 2011 at 4:44 am

Britta,
I had never heard of anyone in Australia living like this and would have thought it impossible until I met my brother-in-law and his family. They live a very similar lifestyle to the Bates family. The children are home schooled, girls wear long dresses, no television, etc. Christianity is the centre of everything they do. (They belong to an Orthodox church.) I think that families like the Bates are often invisible unless you are part of their community.

To Kelly & Gil,
I really admire the fact that you are allowing your children to grow up; volunteer Fire Fighters, college, Lawson mowing lawns, etc. I read alot of criticism from others about you being overprotective but I see you allowing them to fly when they are ready.

God bless you.
Meggie

Anna July 11, 2011 at 10:39 am

Well, in Germany it’s forbidden to homeschool your children, so it isn’t as easy to have such a lifestyle. Children have to go to a public or private school.
There are very few people who absolutely want to homeschool their children in Germany, but there have been cases, where parents even had to go to jail for several months, because they didn’t send their children to school.
There is also a family named Romeike who moved to the USA, because they weren’t allowed to homeschool their children in Germany.
http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,674492,00.html
In general, people are a LOT less religious in Germany. I spent some time in the “Bible Belt” in the USA and it was very astonishing for me that there are churches everywhere and that a lot of people go there. In Germany there are a lot of very old and beautiful churches but most of the (very few) people who attend curch are very old. I am also not a Cristian.

I’m afraid, all this was a little off topic. I absolutely love the picture. I think it’s funny that the blue colour of their clothes match pretty well. ^^ A beautiful couple. I wish you all the best.

Greetings from Munich, Germany. ^^

It seems to me that courtship is very like receiving a ‘promise’ ring which indicates that the couple announcing that they are indeed committed and contemplate engagement and marriage when the time is right assuming things have gone well in their relationship. As for me I firmly believe that, rather than giving away pieces of one’s heart, dating gives a young person a chance to see where and to whom their heart will eventually belong. Since I also believe in ‘live and let live’ if people believe in courtship, it is their considered choice. My life is much more intersting since I have friends from a variety of backgrounds and beliefs.
